More info

Even before Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, David McConaughy had his mind set on preserving part of the battlefield for future generations.

The Gettysburg attorney bought four acres of history for $900 in October of 1863.  By 1878, as more land was acquired, monuments and annual reunions of veterans began to dot the landscape.  Licensed Battlefield Guides Garry Adelman and Timothy Smith brandish numerous photos that illustrate the park's early development.
