More info

"The Pennsylvania Society of New York" was started in 1899 by a group of Pennsylvania businessmen living in New York City who decided to gather together for dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. Their goal was to establish a society “uniting all Pennsylvanians at home and away from home in bonds of friendship and devotion to their native or adopted state.”

The following year a young British journalist and Member of Parliament, Winston Churchill, was a guest at the dinner and regaled the diners with his tales of the Boer War in South Africa. This began the tradition of having a guest speaker at the function.

Every year, The Pennsylvania Society presents its Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement to a prominent person in recognition of leadership, citizenship and contributions to the arts, science, education and industry. In addition to the honor itself, the Society contributes to a Pennsylvania charity chosen by the recipient of the Gold Medal.
